Relationship patterns & attachment

Understanding relationship patterns and attachment

You may want closeness and still pull away when conflict begins. You may work hard to keep the peace, fear rejection or feel responsible for another person’s emotions. Noticing a familiar pattern can be frustrating, especially when you want relationships to feel different.

Understanding a pattern is not assigning a label.

Attachment is a way of thinking about how people seek connection, safety and emotional support. Your experiences can influence what feels risky in relationships and how you respond when connection feels uncertain. The aim is not to put you into a fixed category, but to understand the responses that make sense in your story.

What we might explore.

We may look at what happens when you need reassurance, set a limit, disagree or feel misunderstood. What do you expect from the other person? What feels hard to say? How do you protect yourself? These questions can help make familiar interactions easier to notice and discuss.

Work individually or together.

Individual therapy offers room to explore your own experience across relationships, including boundaries and self-trust. Couples therapy makes space to understand the cycle partners create together. The right format depends on your circumstances.

There is room for curiosity instead of blame.

A protective response may have served a purpose even when it now creates distance. Therapy offers a place to consider that history without treating it as the whole of who you are.

You do not need to have everything figured out before reaching out. Ask questions about the approach and whether working together feels like the right next step.
